Grief Has Many Voices: Hand Embroidery with The University of York. Wednesday 6 May 5pm to 7pm at Thin Ice Press, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW

Join me for this hand embroidery workshop and create a hand embroidered response to the University of York grief survey.

I will show you how to use fabric and thread to share a story using collected responses from the university’s grief survey. Learn how to create a design using text and images and use a range of hand embroidery stitches to create a unique embroidered design. You will use six stranded embroidery threads and a variety of hand embroidery stitches to build your design.

All materials and equipment are included. However, if you have a basic sewing kit with your favourite tools you are welcome to bring this along.

This class is suitable for complete beginners or people who haven’t embroidered for a while and would like to refine their skills.

This workshop is part of the Projecting Grief exhibition Picturing Grief.

Drawing with Thread with Rural Arts. Saturday 9 May 10am to 4pm at The Old Courthouse, 4 Westgate, Thirsk, YO7 1QS

Join me for this full day workshop and create a hand embroidered picture using different colours and textures of fabric and some simple hand embroidery stitches.

I will guide you through tracing your chosen image to create a hand embroidered design you can trace onto fabric ready to stitch. Bring the details of your piece to life with a variety of colours and textures of fabric and some simple hand embroidery stitches including back stitch, stem stitch and French knots.

All materials and equipment are included in the ticket price. However, if you have a basic sewing kit with your favourite tools or any fabric scraps you would like to include in your piece you are welcome to bring them along.

I will also supply a range of inspiration images but if you have a favourite portrait or landscape image that inspires you, please bring it along. This will need to be printed so you can trace it onto paper during the workshop. The main area of the image will need to fit inside a 6-inch embroidery hoop. This is usually A5 if printing at home or 8 inches by 6 inches if it’s a professionally printed photo.

This class is suitable for people with some embroidery experience who would like to learn how to create their own embroidery designs.

Improvers Hand Embroidery with Leeds Libraries. Saturday 30 May 10.30am to 3pm, The Art Library, Leeds Central Library, Calverley Street, Leeds, LS1 3AB

Join me for this improver’s hand embroidery workshop and learn how to develop your embroidery stitches by working them in new ways and exploring texture and dimension with different threads.
I will supply a range of embroidery threads and fabrics as well as equipment like embroidery hoops and needles for you to develop your skills.

The workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to build on a beginner’s workshop or hasn’t embroidered for a while and would like to rediscover their skills.

Are you working on an existing project or don’t know how to finish that dreaded work in progress? Bring them along to the workshop and I will offer some hints and tips to help you develop your embroidery skills.

Stitchscapes with Rural Arts. Saturday 20 June 10am to 4pm at The Old Courthouse, 4 Westgate, Thirsk, YO7 1QS

Join me for this full day workshop and create a stitched landscape using different colours and textures of fabric and a variety of hand embroidery stitches.

I will guide you through selecting fabrics for the base of your project and how to build up the layers of fabric scraps to create your stitchscape. Bring the details of your piece to life with a variety of hand embroidery stitches including lazy daisy, feather stitch and French knots.

All materials and equipment are included in the ticket price. However, if you have a basic sewing kit with your favourite tools or any fabric scraps you would like to include in your piece you are welcome to bring them along.

I will also supply a range of inspiration images but if you have a favourite landscape image that inspires you, please bring it along. This can be a photo on a phone and doesn’t need to be printed out to refer to during the workshop.

This class is suitable for everyone, whether you’re an experienced stitcher who would like to learn a new technique or a complete beginner with no embroidery experience.
