Thackray Uncovered

Mass X-ray: An Archive responds to a Projector for Mass X-ray from the 1940s which is part of the extensive collection housed at the Thackray Medical Museum.

When I explored the collection store I was drawn to the 1940s/1950s X-ray equipment. I chose the projector for Mass X-ray, imagining the images viewed on walls by doctors and as I explored the theme of X-rays I thought about medical tests I have undergone, creating images that relate to my own medical history.

For the Thackray Uncovered exhibition I created a stitched archive of my own medical history using digital and hand embroidery. Many of the fabrics I used in the pieces are from a similar time period to the projector. These fabrics were passed down to me by my grandmother and hold lots of memories.
