I have been researching the Archive at Sunny Bank Mills since early November and pieces from this collection will be exhibited at the mill in May as part of Weave // Fragments.
My last visit to the Archive in March unearthed a new treasure, carbon copy books. These books are a record of correspondence sent by the mill and my recent samples have been based on the photographs of these books from my last visit.
The mill produced the most beautiful wool fabrics which I wanted to reference in my work so I have been shopping at Fabworks in Dewsbury for some new fabrics. I was drawn to the grey and blue samples on the shelves of the Archive.
Each fabric has a pattern number which corresponds to a peg pattern for the loom, some of the numbers are marked onto the fabric using chain stitch. These details have inspired me to add some hand stitched details to the samples.
The collection is taking shape and I will be posting more images of work in progress on Instagram as I continue to develop new ideas and samples. The exhibition runs from Saturday 20 May to Sunday 2 July at Sunny Bank Mills Gallery in Leeds.
