I’ve been researching the Archive and Finishing Room at Sunny Bank Mills since November with a view to exhibiting at the Mill in the next few months. I’ve started doing some more research based around weaving and the Finishing Room itself where the work will be exhibited.
The space is so amazing, it’s a work of art in it’s own right. There are so many textures and colours to work with.
I love exploring the basement of the Finishing Room where the burnishing press is housed. The large sheets of card were used to add a sheen to the woven wool fabrics manufactured at the mill.
My work will be inspired by the word weave and respond directly to the Finishing Room and the Archive which I have visited a few times. I’m hoping to create a warp like structure which will hang in the space. From this warp I will display items like labels and pirns, based on found objects from the mill.
When the work is installed later this year I am hoping to use one of the amazing windows in the Finishing Room.
